Baby-Proofed

HELPING KEEP YOUR ANXIETY IN CHECK

As most of you know, I am a new mom again after 18 years. As awesome as this experience is, let's face it, nothing in my house is safe. Sure, there are those simple little solutions for plugging electrical outlets and padding corners, but as our little guy grows, I continually find things that aren't suitable for him to pull up on or play with. I have to admit, it's made me a little nuts and a lot panicky!

I began going around our house listing all the things that were issues for us.

  • The electrical cord that goes into the outlet

  • Tall, heavy pieces of furniture that weren't mounted to the wall

  • TVs sitting on consoles

  • Rock fireplace hearth

  • Door handles that simple pull down to release and open

  • Dirt inside potted trees

  • Sharp Corners

  • Cabinet Doors

  • Toilets

  • Dishwasher and Oven

  • Sliding Glass Door

…just to name a few.

Recently, I chiseled out an entire weekend that was 100% donated to further babyproof our space. I wouldn't say that I'm an expert at this in any way or shape, but I did do my research and I hope this assists you in resting a little bit easier when your baby starts toddling around soon.

First things first, get those outlets plugged. I chose

OUTLET PLUGS, Wappa Baby

These plugs come in increments of 50. Keep in mind, that's only 25 outlets. Each room averages 4 outlets (8 plugs), so go ahead and do yourself a favor and purchase two packs.

OUTLET COVERS, Dreambaby

There simply isn't an easier product to cover up those cords AND bonus, it's a two pack for less than $6. You simply remove the existing screw from the switch plate, add the Dreambaby cover over the switch plate, tighten the screw, and voila. It's that simple. You can also find this product at your local Lowe's.

TV MOUNTS, ONN

Mounting the tv is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it's one less thing you have to worry about your baby pulling over onto him. This tv mount allows for lots of options for adjusting the tv position.

CABINET LATCH LOCKS

I really loved the idea of something that didn't require screws or permanence. These latch locks are a great concept, but they do allow for some open space that allows little fingers to get mashed. That is a completely different issue. The primary goal here was to prevent getting into breakable items or cleaning products.

APPLIANCE LATCHES, Munchkin

By far, this is one of my favorite child safety purchases. It's so multi functional. I used this on  storage furniture doors, trash drawer, toilets, oven, refrigerator and the dishwasher. The bond is very strong and the latch is really convenient to open for adults, but too tricky for baby.

DOOR LATCHES, Door Monkey

I have purchased one of these for every single interior door that we have. It's an awesome way to prevent opening or closing doors as well as finger pinching. Simply slides into place with no hardware to install.

SLIDING DOOR LATCH

Effective for a deterrent, but we haven't had this put to the test yet.

BABY GATES, Munchkin

Whether you are trying to keep pets in one specific place or a baby within a zone, this gate is super amazing!!!! It's adjustable in length and really durable. Also, it opens in both directions!

BABY PLAY YARD, Regalo

I wanted to create a play space that incorporated our sofa so that we could be included in playtime or simply downtime while he played. We purchased two of these and put them together for one enormous play yard. You can also do the same with one (which we have used as well). Again, it serves a dual purpose if you have pets :)

BABY HELMET

I know, I know, it looks silly, but so does and enormous pump knot or even worse, stitches. I wouldn't say this is 100% the best design. It has two long straps that tie under the chin. These could easily be shortened and velcro added to each side, but if I did that, what would he have to chew on? HA!

FIREPLACE HEARTH COVER, Pinterest + my amazing friend, Todd.

Genius is all I have to say for this. Watch the DIY, find someone handy with tools and have fun choosing fabric!

BABY MONITOR, Hello Baby

We love our Wyze Cam to be able to see our little guy from an app on our phones, but in the middle of the night, if the app goes down or your phone battery dies, then there goes your monitoring.

We needed a monitor that reached a long distance and that had remote control motion access in case he moved about in the bed out of sight of the camera . The Hello Baby Monitor solved all our problems.

ANTI-TIP BRACKETS

This particular feature is often overlooked or forgotten, but I've personally dealt with the devastating mistake of not using this and urge you to anchor anything that could tip to the wall.

CORNER PROTECTORS

We moved most pieces of furniture that had corners, but some things you just can't do without. These simple, clear protectors do the job.

POTTED PLANT BASKETS

I couldn't keep his little hands out of them until I put the pot into a larger basket that he couldn’t reach down into. Choose something fun and that fits your home décor. You'll be able to use this for so many things after you no longer need it to mask that hidden dirt ;)

Ultimately, no amount of babyproofing replaces good common sense ;) We all have to be vigilant with these little people. They can be so smart and sneaky!

Hang in there. We've got this, moms!
